Major Jewish holidays are marked throughout Chicago land with the recruitment of over one hundred volunteers and their family members in addition to our regular Chaplains. These volunteers are supplied by the CMC Chaplain with a variety of handouts and holiday gifts as they are sent out to celebrate with more than a thousand Jewish residents of local nursing and retirement homes.
The volunteers are more often than not accompanied by their children. Together they use Jewish songs, joyous spirit, and traditional refreshments to bring the holiday narratives and observances to life for the senior residents. Purim packages and megillah readings, Chanukah menorah lightings and dreidels, shofar blowing, and the mitzvah of lulav and esrog count among these highly anticipated, popular, and meaningful seasonal events.
